DEFINITIONS

1. Detection Dog – A trained dog that uses their nose to notify a handler of the presence of a trained odor. 
2. Distractor – Anything that elicits an unwanted behavior and takes away from the task at hand.
3. Stimuli – Anything that elicits or triggers a behavior.
4. Brain Context – The context that is built around a stimuli
5. Successive Approximation – Stair step method.  Breaking training down to small steps that start at the bottom and work their way to the top (goal).
6. Threshold – Amount of stimuli needed to elicit a behavior.
7. Stimulus Response Theory – Pairing of stimuli and behaviors using positive reinforcement (.5-1.5 seconds of the behavior)
8. Reward – A Real thing. Has lasting power. Can be controlled.

Things to be mindful of

 – Don’t create adversity – By over correcting or over stimulating the dog (reaction v. Respond)

 – Don’t be the crutch that enables or contributes to the Distractor.

 – Disclosure – Developmental Stages and time for behavior to change
