Basic obedience is the foundation for all other dog training. In this session we are adding the sit command to the basic heel that the dog already knows. Â The dog knows that when we step off with our left foot that he is supposed to follow in the proper heeling position. Â Now we are teaching that when that left foot stops, he is supposed to sit in the proper position. Â If your dog still needs to learn to heel, please see our previous video on basic loose leash heeling.Â
As with any other training, we want to be super sensitive to the commands and stimulus introduced. Â We will start with short five minute sessions and only use the “heel” and “sit” commands plus praise.
In the beginning, do not worry about being perfect with the position of the sit. We want the dog to learn the command and the action that goes with it. Â After the dog learns the behavior we will fine tune to get the exact position that we want. Â Teach each small step and build as you go.
As a handler, we also have to practice and train ourselves. Â Our timing and tone of both corrections and praise are just as important to the process. Â All of these things will carry on into every other aspect of training as we grow and progress with our dogs.
