How To Successfully Use A Police K9 (Part 1)

Turns out man’s best friend can be man’s best co-worker, too. There are many practical uses for police K9s, ranging from drug detection to patrol handling; however, they aren’t exactly like you see demonstrated on your weekly cable television shows.

In today’s blog post, we’ll go over the correct (and successful) way you can utilize a police K9 unit. If you’re looking to become a police K9 handler, sign up for one of our dog obedience training courses at Custom Canine Unlimited. Our qualified and experienced instructors can help you train your police K9 for an array of tasks, including criminal apprehension, tracking,  bomb detection and more.

Contact us today for more information, and continue reading below to learn more about how you can successfully use a police K9 (after the proper dog obedience training, of course.) Also, stay tuned for Part 2 of this blog post.

For Drug Detection

Police canines can be trained to detect certain types of drugs, making them a valuable tool for multiple law enforcement drug cases. There are two common uses for drug detection canines:

  1. To locate drugs. Police K9s trained for this can literally locate hidden or concealed drugs.
  2. For probable cause. Police K9s trained for this can alert their handler for probable cause purposes. For example, a positive drug detection alert from a police K9 can give law enforcement probable cause for a search warrant or warrantless search of someone’s property.

Fun fact: Traffic stops are the most common use for drug detection K9s. We offer some of the best drug detection courses in the nation, and our instructors can provide you with thorough details on multiple ways you can utilize your police K9s in law enforcement. Learn more about these courses here.

For Crowd Control

Police K9s are a useful and effective strategy to move or disperse large crowds. Though not all police departments allow for this type of police K9 use, you can find police K9s at concerts, sporting events and other crowd-heavy venues for crowd control purposes.

For Criminal Apprehensions

If a suspect is fleeing from a scene or is acting in a threatening manner, you can train a police K9 to chase after or engage with the suspect and, ultimately, apprehend them. With the proper commands and knowledge to read multiple scenarios, a police K9 and their handler can be extremely useful for criminal apprehensions.
