What Dogs Can Have for Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and you might already be planning the menu for your feast. While it is tempting to share some of your favorite dishes with your furry friend, it is important to consider their nutritional needs and potential health risks. Some human foods can be toxic or cause digestive problems for dogs. So, what can dogs have for Thanksgiving? In this blog post, we will share some safe and healthy options that you can add to your dog’s plate of gratitude.

Cooked Turkey:

Yes, dogs can have cooked turkey meat in moderation. Turkey is a great source of lean protein, amino acids, and vitamins B and B6, but avoid giving your dog turkey skin, bones, or gravy. The skin is high in fat and can cause pancreatitis and gastrointestinal upset, while bones can splinter or obstruct the intestines. Gravy often contains onion, garlic, or other seasonings that are toxic to dogs.

Plain Sweet Potatoes:

Sweet potatoes are a popular side dish in many Thanksgiving menus, and dogs can also benefit from their nutritional value. Sweet potatoes are high in dietary fiber, vitamins A, C, and B6, and beta-carotene. However, make sure to give your dog plain cooked sweet potatoes without added sugar, butter, or marshmallows. These ingredients are high in calories and can cause weight gain, diabetes, or dental problems.

Green Beans:

Green beans are another healthy and low-calorie option for your furry friend. Green beans are rich in fiber, vitamins A, C, and K, and antioxidants. They also promote digestion, hydration, and weight management in dogs. However, avoid giving your dog canned green beans that are high in sodium or other preservatives.

Pumpkin:

Pumpkin is not only a popular ingredient in Thanksgiving desserts but also a superfood for dogs. Pumpkin is high in fiber, potassium, magnesium, and vitamin C, and can aid digestion, regularity, and urinary health in dogs. You can give your dog plain canned pumpkin or cooked fresh pumpkin, but avoid giving them pumpkin pie filling or other sugary products.

Homemade Treats:

If you want to treat your dog with some festive snacks, you can make your own homemade treats with natural and safe ingredients. Some ideas include turkey and sweet potato biscuits, pumpkin and peanut butter bites, or green bean chips. Just make sure the treats don’t contain any toxic or harmful ingredients, and consult your vet if your dog has any allergies or sensitivities.

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude and celebration, and your furry friend can be a part of the festivities without compromising their health. By choosing safe and healthy options like cooked turkey, plain sweet potatoes, green beans, pumpkin, or homemade treats, you can give your dog a special and nutritious meal that they will be thankful for. Remember to always supervise your dog’s diet, avoid giving them table scraps or leftovers, and seek professional advice if you have any concerns about your dog’s health.

Happy Thanksgiving!
